Local company makes New Year’s ball part

Local Winona Company Thern, Inc., has a hand in this year’s New Year’s celebration in Times Square.

Hudson Scenic of New York, NY, selected Thern, Inc. to provide an electric power winch for use in lowering the New Year’s Ball in New York’s Time Square. The new ball is 12 feet in diameter and weighs 11,875 pounds. The winch that will raise and lower the ball is a special 4HPF40M model and is designed for inverted installation below the ball and pole. It is rated for over seven ton capacity (14,000 pounds) and will slowly lower the ball from its perch, 75 feet above, during the countdown to midnight. The ball is made up of 2,468 individual Waterford crystals and is lit from the inside by 32,256 LEDS capable of producing more than 16 million colors.

“This is the second Thern winch to be used for this iconic event and we are proud to play such an important role as our nation and the work ushers in the New Year,” said marketing coordinator Ed Hahn.
