From: WVS Board of Directors
Be proud of yourself, WINONA! In this time of economic unrest and financial uncertainty, you set aside your personal concerns and dug deep to help those in need in our community.
Winona Volunteer Services’ (WVS) mission is…. working to improve the quality of life in our community. With a caring network of dedicated volunteers and partners we secure and distribute food, clothing, information, referrals and emergency assistance in a respectful and dignified manner to people in need.
Since early fall, WVS was concerned with the growing client base using the food shelf and our ability to provide basic food items to these individuals needing our help. By the end of the summer, we were serving 21% more households than we did in 2008 and were spending 43% more on food purchases than we did in 2008. As the wintery season started, so did our last major food drive of the year and Winonans did not let the less fortunate in our community go without the food they needed. Through the coordination of Merchant’s Bank employees, we had the best 10 Days of Giving in history. Then, over 50 community volunteers rose to the occasion to unload, sort and stock over 43,000 pounds of food that arrived over a three-day pick-up period. Cash donations poured in for the food shelf and continue to be dropped off. Right after the food was sorted, Lions Club members prepared 550 ham baskets which were distributed to eligible food shelf households four days before Christmas.
We, the Board of Directors at WVS, feel rewarded that our community has acknowledged the value of what we do by continuing to support WVS so we can carry out our mission and serve our fellow citizens. Those who need our services are very appreciative of the generosity of their friends and neighbors. Our staff and volunteers are just awestruck by your thoughtfulness.
Be proud of yourself WINONA! While other food shelves and nonprofit organizations around the country are reeling during these economic times, you have ensured that WVS will be able to continue its mission and improve the quality of life of this wonderful community.
Thank you and Happy New Year to all!
