Winona gymnasts ‘show great poise’ at meets

The Winona Winhawks girls gymnastics team headed across the border to battle Wisconsin’s Holmen, West Salem and Westby teams. While missing a few key players, the younger part of the team stepped up to keep Winona in the running. With just a single event performance by anyone above ninth grade, teammates Alli Benson, Chloe Hughes, Amaya Ramirez and Elle Engel stepped up in a big way.

“Bars and beam were our strongest event performances tonight. It showed great poise for our younger gymnasts to hit their routines in the varsity line up. They will only improve with experience; we are excited to see how they grow and improve throughout the season,” said coach Brittney Steine.

The Winhawk gymnastics team traveled to Faribault Middle School on Saturday for the 40th Annual Faribault Invite. The highlight of the meet for the team was freshman Chloe Hughes’ tie for 11th place on floor with a 9.25. With many of the top teams in the state competing, the Faribault Invite is often referred to as Minnesota’s “mini state meet.”

“Chloe being recognized at this meet demonstrates she has the potential to return to the state meet this year,” said coach Steine. “Last year Chloe qualified for the state competition on bars; it would be fun to get to see her show off her floor routine there too. She is working this year on her consistency in meets, and when she hits a routine she is truly a competitor to watch.

The next meet will be at Northfield on Thursday, January 11. The next home meet will be on Tuesday, January 16, versus Faribault.
