Mental Health Awareness Month at Winona Public Library

(4/30/2018)

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month and the Winona Public Library is recognizing the month by hosting several events. There will be not one but two book talks on “The Silver Linings Playbook” by Matthew Quick, a movie showing of “The Silver Linings Playbook,” and a stress-management workshop.

In the book, “Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings during the years he spends in a neural health facility. He believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy,” according to the publisher.

The Winona Public Library’s book discussion will discuss Pat, the emotional roller coaster called life, and the silver linings behind it all on Wednesday, May 2, at 2 p.m. in the library’s Bell Art Room. If you cannot make the book discussion, the library is hosting a second book talk on Thursday, May 3, at 6 p.m. If you cannot make either book talk but would like to follow along and share your thoughts, go to http://tinyurl.com/WinonaPublicLibraryReads and let us know what you thought.

Following the book talks, “The Silver Linings Playbook” movie (2012) starring both Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence will be shown on Thursday, May 10, at 4:45 p.m. Popcorn and a light beverage will be served.

To end the series on mental health, there will be a stress-management workshop on Thursday, May 24, at 6 p.m. Mario Einsman of Counseling Associates, LLC, will discuss tips, tricks, and techniques to help managing stress levels.
