The Green Grocer: Turmeric is the new kale

Remember how crazy we all used to be about kale? Kale chips, kale smoothies, massaged kale salads. You probably even have an I heart kale T-shirt somewhere in your closet right now.

Well you can put that shirt in the donation bag because there’s a new trend in town. Say hello to turmeric. Turmeric powder, turmeric supplements, turmeric face wash, fresh turmeric — no matter what the form, it’s all the rage.

Turmeric’s recent rise to power is due in part to its favor among researchers. Research has been conducted on turmeric’s benefits for just about anything that ails you, from inflammation, brain disease, and joint problems to depression, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and cancer.

Those of you who haven’t learned about turmeric from Dr. Oz have certainly discovered it on Pinterest, where pictures of golden milk flow cheerily across every page.

And if, by some strange set of circumstances, you have not yet heard about turmeric or golden milk, at least you can rely on the Green Grocer to keep you informed on all health trends.

1. Heat two cups light, unsweetened coconut milk (or almond or soy milk).

2. Add 1/2 tablespoon peeled, grated fresh ginger; one tablespoon peeled, grated fresh turmeric; and three to four black peppercorns.

3. Stir well and bring to a simmer.

4. Simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten to taste (if desired).
