Leighton Broadcasting has made the decision not to carry Minnesota Vikings football games for the coming season. General manager Matt Senne said the decision came down to finances, and the company elected to invest in other areas of local sports coverage.
“We have wrestled with the decision to not carry the Vikings for a long time,” explained Senne, adding that this year the company invested in improvements to its signals on AM 1230 KWNO and AM 1380 KG Country by adding translators at 98.7FM and 101.5FM. “Although we find Vikings games valuable to broadcast as a service to fans, the cost could not be negotiated lower and we had to weigh that cost with other areas we felt our money could be spent that would benefit the community more.” Senne continued, “We are committing a lot of dollars to carrying every Winona Senior High football game and all Cotter football away games, along with Rushford-Peterson away games. We will also be working with Dr. Pepper and Winona State at every Warrior home football game to award one WSU student a $500 scholarship every week.”
