Narcan training can save lives

(9/26/2018)

Between 2008 and 2016 there have been 29 drug overdose deaths in Winona County, according to the 2016 Drug Overdose Deaths Report from the Minnesota Department of Health. In an effort to reduce the number of deaths due to opioid overdose, Winona County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) partnered with the Steve Rummler HOPE Network to offer a free Narcan training in Winona.

Narcan is the brand name for naloxone, which is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose by allowing the individual to breathe normally again. One hundred Hiawatha Valley Mental Health employees attended this training to learn how and when to administer the drug, how it works, and how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose. These individuals now have the potential to save lives and give people with substance abuse issues a chance to get into treatment.

“I am grateful that we had the opportunity to participate in this training and now have the knowledge to save someone’s life,” said Morgan Popp, outpatient mental health/substance abuse therapist. “Thankfully we have never had an overdose incident in our offices; however, it is reassuring to know that if the situation ever arises that we are prepared.”

ASAP is a coalition of community members devoted to cultivating a drug-free culture for youth in the Winona area. To learn more please visit http://www.winonacountyasap.org/.
