The Winona Chamber of Commerce Foundation announced at its annual meeting the creation of the Dennis Meyer Memorial Scholarship.
Dennis Meyer, vice president of IT at Knitcraft, passed away unexpectedly in May 2018. He served as the IT manager at Knitrcaft for 36 years and as its vice president in his last five years.
“For those of you who did not know Dennis, let me just tell you that he was a kind, decent and honorable man. He was also very involved in both community and chamber activities, giving generously of his time and talent,” stated Winona Chamber of Commerce President Della Schmidt. “In keeping with the spirit of civic-mindedness that defined the life of Dennis Meyer, the scholarship bearing his name will be for a student who exemplifies leadership and giving-back.”
Within the Winona-area chamber, Meyer served on the board of directors, with one year spent as chairman of the board. He was active for many years with the chamber’s public policy and legislative advocacy work including traveling frequently to the Capitol and spending time on the phone and emailing to lobby on issues important to business. He volunteered on the Family Night on the Farm Committee and the Manufacturing Week Celebrations Committee, served on the Chamber Foundation Board and was involved with supporting the Winona Chamber REACH initiative. Dennis was a true believer in the work of the chamber.
Dennis served on the Goodview City Council for 16 years, as well as worked closely with the Goodview Business Association and WAPS Community Task Force.
The Dennis Meyer Scholarship Fund has been established with the Winona Chamber Foundation. The scholarship will be given annually to a high school graduate of the chamber’s career pathway REACH program who demonstrates leadership and civic engagement. Donations may be made in honor of the life of Dennis Meyer by contacting the Winona Area Chamber of Commerce.
