Cardinal sports wrap up

(2/27/2019)

Track and field

Fueled by Desmond Steward’s third-place showing — and a fourth-place effort by Kyle Lichttenegger in the 60 — the Saint Mary’s men’s team was sitting at ninth after day one of the MIAC Indoor Championships in Northfield, Minn., while the women held down the 12th spot after day one (thanks, in part, to the efforts of freshman Sydney Klausler).

Christian Beamer shattered the Saint Mary’s school record in the high jump, clearing 1.96 meters to win the event and help the Cardinal sophomore to a 10th-place finish after the first four events of the seven-event heptathlon at the Indoor Championships on Friday.

Baseball

The Cardinals erupted for 11 runs against Cabrini — including four on Matthew Piechowski’s first collegiate grand slam — as they rolled to an 11-1 win in the team’s season opener on Sunday in Auburndale, Fla. The offense remained in high gear in their second game of the day, as the Cardinals walked away with yet another lopsided win, taking advantage of a single-game, school-record 16 walks and cruising to a 13-8 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering.

The next day, the team banged out 10 hits and scored four of its five runs in the first two innings in beating MSOE 5-3 in game one of a doubleheader on Monday in Auburndale, Fla. The Cardinals completed the sweep in convincing fashion, recording a second-straight 10-hit attack and rolling to a 10-2 victory.

Softball

The Saint Mary’s fastpitch softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning — including two on a double by Hallie Schmeling and the game winner on a throwing error — to rally for a 10-9 victory over Alma in their season-opener on Sunday. The Cardinals could have used some more late-inning heroics in their second game of the afternoon, as Neumann scored five unanswered runs, erasing a 2-0 lead and dealing SMU a 5-2 setback.

Men’s hockey

On Thursday, SMU scored the game’s first three goals, survived a slight hiccup late in the third period, and cruised to a 5-2 win over the Cobbers in the MIAC tournament quarterfinals in Moorhead, Minn., earning the Cardinals another post-season shot at the top-seeded Auggies on Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn.
