On Saturday, April 27, Hope Lutheran High School and St. Martin’s Lutheran School of Winona held a spelling bee for third through eighth graders from five Southeast Minnesota Lutheran schools. Competitors completed a written test and six rounds of oral spelling. Prizes were awarded to the top three individuals at each grade level, the top three teams in each grade division, and an overall school team award. Schools competing included St. Martin’s of Winona, Immanuel Lutheran-Silo of Lewiston, Immanuel Lutheran-Plainview, Rochester Central Lutheran School (RCLS) and Faribault Lutheran. St. John’s Lutheran of Wykoff was unable to make it because of the snowy weather.
Winners in the third- and fourth-grade team division were: first, RCLS; second, Immanuel-Silo; and third, St. Martin’s.
Individual third- and fourth-grade winners were: first, Mariel Haring; second, Jensen Dahl; and third, Analise Wagner. In the fifth- and sixth-grade division winners included: first, Immanuel-Silo; second, St. Martin’s; and third, RCLS.
Individual fifth- and sixth-grade winners were: first, Jaiden Severson; second, Madeline Weimer; and third, Eric Dahl. In the seventh- and eighth-grade team division, Silo and RCLS tied for first and St. Martin’s took third. Individual winners included: first, Isaac Nelson; second, Layla Tews; and third, Tiegan Prigge.
Overall school team awards included: first, Immanuel-Silo; second, Rochester Central Lutheran School; and third, St. Martin’s.
All spellers are to be congratulated for their tremendous work and talents.
