The Winona High wrestling squad traveled to Rochester on Thursday, January 9, for a quadrangular meet coming away with wins over St. Charles and Rochester’s John Marshall and a loss to Mankato West. Evan Maurud and Shawn Mugo each recorded three wins while Isaac Allred, Evann Fabian, Drew Meyer and Lance Thorn all won two matches on the night.
The wrestlers competed well in the Plainview Tournament on Saturday, January 11, placing third out of 17 teams with only five points separating the top three teams. Lake City won the tournament with Maple River and Winona coming in close behind. Ryan Henningson, Drew Meyer, and Lance Thorn all won individual titles with Evann Fabian, Evan Maurud, and Tyler Nachtigal taking runner-up honors and Logan Henningson and Shawn Mugo coming in with fourth-place finishes.
Winona hosted a dual meet with Mankato East on Thursday, January 16, earning a 39-33 win with Evan Maurud, Brenin Speltz and Zander Rusert scoring pins and Isaac Allred and Drew Meyer winning hard fought decisions. Zander Rusert pinned the number-four-ranked heavyweight in the state with the score knotted at 33.
The next action for the Winona grapplers will be on Thursday when they go to Rochester for a quadrangular with Rochester Mayo, Northfield, and Farmington. On Saturday, the mat men will compete in the Lake City Tournament.
