River photography exhibit opens at MMAM

Opening January 3 and running through April 16, 2017, at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum is “Confluence: Geography, History, and Culture at the Intersection of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, Photographs by Luke Erickson.” Confluence is an exhibition of photographs highlighting the historical, economic and social importance of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, and serves as a call to observe, preserve, and protect watersheds. Each photograph captures the current state of these rivers and explores the interplay between natural features and man-made objects. Featured are images of and rural sections of these rivers inside and out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Each photograph is a portrait of the current state of these rivers and each river’s particular alteration, enhancement, and perceived improvement, in the form of their featured man-made bridges, locks, dams, gates, fences, gutters and drains.

Erickson is a Minneapolis photographer and director of the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography. The exhibition is part of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum’s Mississippi River Series of ongoing exhibitions of artists inspired by the river.

Erickson will lead a free Gallery Walk & Talk on Sunday, January 29, from 2-3 p.m., an open discussion where he will speak his process and inspirations, and answer questions of visitors. Space is limited for the Walk & Talk so please register by calling 507-474-6626.

There is always something new to experience at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, a nonprofit art museum and educational center supported by over 1,500 members, donors, granters and sponsors.
