The Winona Winhawk floor hockey team methodically carved its way to a 13-2 victory over the Minneapolis Edison Tommies on Wednesday night in the Twin Cities.
Showing a little bus lag, the Winhawks fell behind 2-0 early in the first period. The Schultz brothers, Shane and Shawn, took care of that deficit quickly scoring a total of five times to put Winona up 5-2 at the end of the first period.
The Winhawks took control of the contest during period two, getting six goals from three different players. Shawn Schultz chipped in two more goals on behalf of the Winhawks, while teammate Brady Marg pounded home a goal as well. Winhawk defenseman turned offensive scoring machine Shyann Lazetera netted a hat trick, slipping three pucks past the Tommie goalie. Anna Pampuch and Jillian Fredrickson both showed improved play digging the puck out of the corner and setting up their teammates on several occasions. Goalie Shane Miller stood tall in the nets turning back every Edison scoring threat with the help of rock solid defenseman Nick McCasland.
The third period belonged to Marshall Behl and Brock Espy. This hard working duo put the heat on the Tommie goalie during the 15 minutes of play. Only some outstanding play by the Edison goalie kept these two Winhawks from extending the Winona lead.
The Winhawks head in to the playoffs with a full head of steam and will travel to St. Cloud on Wednesday, March 8, for a 4:30 contest, with the winner heading to the state tournament.
