The Winona Winhawk floor hockey team traveled to St. Cloud on Wednesday night with a state tournament berth on the line. Unfortunately for the Winhawks the St. Cloud Slapshots had a little more gas in their tank and defeated Winona 11-3.
The Slapshots took control early, snapping in eight first period goals before the Winhawks knew what hit them. Winona goalie Shane Miller was peppered with 26 shots during the 15-minute time frame.
Winona played the Slapshots fairly even the rest of the way with the Schultz men, Shane and Shawn, tallying three goals between them. St. Cloud matched Winona’s output by scoring three goals of their own to complete the scoring.
The third period saw Winona forwards Brady Marg, Marshall Behl, Brock Espy, Anna Pampuch, and Jillian Fredrickson try their best to score but were turned away time and time again by the Slapshot goalie. Winona defenseman Shayann Lazetera, playing her steady game, was key in keeping St. Cloud from adding to their total.
Winona finishes the year with a record of 4-9 and a pile full of fun times and memories from a highly productive season of growth and learning.
