The Winona VFW Buddies have had an incredible season, ending last weekend at the State Championship games in Willmar, Minn. The Buddies went into the State Championship games with a record of 29-2, and beat last year’s State Champions Centennial 6-5 in the first game. In the second game, the Buddies lost to Monticello 9-2, who went on to win the tournament as 2017 State Champs. The Buddies then fell to Rochester 12-1 — a team the Buddies had beaten three times this season. The Buddies finished the season 30-4 as District Champions.
The Buddies are comprised of 15-17 year-olds who had a lot of success in local programs growing up in the area. Some played with Goodview Sandlot, Minnesota City and others with the Winona Heat.
In the 31 games leading up to the State Championship Tournament, 16 teams have been held to one run or less. The Buddies also boasted three no-hitters — two by Sam Nascak and one by Spencer Wright. The team also batted .339 as a team with Brody Bittle leading the way at .481.
