Throw Silence to the Wind on September 21 at Winona State

Suicide is tragically the second-leading cause of death among college students. Yet, the subject is often met with silence. On September 21, Active Minds Winona State Chapter will host Throw Silence to the Wind, which will be an impactful display of over 1,000 pinwheels that represent the number of college students who die by suicide each year. The aim of this powerful exhibit is to increase awareness of suicide and its impact, as well as increase understanding and help-seeking for mental health in general.

Suicide and mental health are important topics that, sadly, are not well understood and rarely talked about. This silence and lack of knowledge leads to stigma, which often contributes to suffering. Active Minds Winona State Chapter aims to change that. Through the Throw Silence to the Wind display and ongoing efforts of the club, we hope to change the conversation and culture of mental health and suicide prevention in our community.

We hope this display will touch all who view it, remind us that none of us is alone, and let everyone know that help is always available. We also hope the display will spark meaningful conversations, inspire positive action, and provide enduring hope. When we use our individual and collective talents and voices, not only does it end the silence, it gives others permission do the same. Together, let’s make Winona State and the Winona community more inviting and comfortable places to talk about mental health and suicide prevention so we can make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of others.

Throw Silence to the Wind will be held all day on Thursday, September 21, in the courtyard in front of Kryzsko Commons on the Winona State campus. All are welcome!
