From: Maxine Aldinger, Winona

From the plains of North Dakota
from Minnesota, too.
Young women and men heeded
their country’s call
they did it for me and you.

From California’s canyons,
cities and little towns
they waved goodbye to loved ones
with courage and conviction, nary a frown.

A church bell pealed
folks dressed in black
memorial services disclosed
their loved ones wouldn’t be back.

Oh what they scarified
so we could be free!
Does a tear come to your eye
as you fall on bended knee?

The young and the brave
we honor on this Veterans Day.
For those left behind
we remember as we pray.
