The Winhawks kicked off their gymnastics season with a close meet against the Austin Packers on December 14, tailing the reigning section champions 133.675 to 135.525. The Winhawks were led by senior captain co-captain Callie Van Dyck as she won vault with a 9.325 and was second in the all around with a 34.875. Strong performances came from co-captain Adamary Rosas scoring for the team on bars, beam, and floor, as well as freshman Chloe Hughes who won floor for the Winhawks with a 9.45 score. Sophomore Emily Cierzan contributed to the team score on all four events.
“Our first meet was a great learning experience,” said coach Brittney Steine. “We had many successes and a few learning opportunities we look forward to improving upon in our next meet.”
The Winhawk gymnastics team hit the road and headed to Mankato on Saturday to take on the Mankato East Cougars and Mankato West Scarlettes in a triangular meet. Team was led by senior co-captain Callie Van Dyck as she scored a season high 9.2 to win the bars competition and second in the all around to Mankato West’s Taryn Sellner. Van Dyck also placed third on vault and beam and fifth on floor. Chloe Hughes and teammate Emily Cierzan contributed to the team scores on all four events and continue to make improvements in performing under pressure. A few new appearances were made to the varsity scene by seventh grader Elle Engel and ninth graders Gabby Shadle and Amaya Ramirez.
“Today we asked our younger gymnasts to take big steps in competing at the varsity level,” remarked Steine. “The pressure was a little nerve wracking but they stepped up their game to keep the team going strong. They are demonstrating their desire to keep the program going strong in the future.”
