Cotter’s Ellie Macal (#33) goes for the shot.

Rambler girls true to form, head to conference

Cotter’s lady Ramblers will proceed to the Three Rivers Conference this week, after delivering a 51-18 thumping to the Fillmore Falcons on Friday. An early push from Fillmore might have looked dangerous, but Cotter pulled into an early double-digit lead, and the Ramblers finished the first period with a heavy 29-10, setting up the rest of the night. “Offensively we got off to a really slow start by missing a lot of quality shots,” head coach Pat Bowlin said, “but we had a couple of good spurts on offense that got us over the top.”

Rambler free throws were the weapon of choice on Friday, with Cotter keystones Josie Huelskamp and Isabel Northrup leading the charge. Huelskamp was a driving player, charging into Falcons’ defense and scattering them under the net, and Northrup made shooting look easy, stealing some set-ups from underneath the Falcons’ noses.

At only seven minutes into the second, the Lady Ramblers had stretched their lead to 39-13. But there was no lapses or relaxation. Cotter only let Fillmore put up eight more points in the second and ended 33 up by the game’s end.

Coach Bowlin is proud of the Ramblers’ defense. “Our defense carried us again with one of our best efforts of the year,” he said. Friday night was also Seniors Night, the final regular season home game of the year where the school honors the senior class players. “It was a great senior night celebration for us to recognize the great contributions that Josie Huelskamp and Mallory Cunningham have made to our program.”

Cotter’s girl’s varsity basketball team will play their first game of the section tournament at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 22.
