Being that April is National Poetry Month, sponsors of the annual Great River Shakespeare Festival/Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest chose to hold the contest kick-off event for 2018 on Tuesday, April 10. Hosted at the Blue Heron with music by Flutistry, the event attracted avid poets, especially, of course, “sonneteers,” to hear a variety of sonnets read, and contest commentary by Winona’s Poets Laureate, present and past, Ken McCullough, Jim Armstrong, and Emilio Degrazia. Also present were Associate Poet Laureate Nicolle Ramsey; Aaron Young, managing director of GRSF; and an unexpected treat, Heid Erdrich, poet and member of the Turtle Mountain Ojibwe.
The sonnet contest has already received about 130 entries to date, and sonnets may be submitted up until June 1.
Visit sonnetcontest.org, submit sonnets if you are inclined, and mark Saturday, August 4, at WSU’s Miller Auditorium for the final event, when winning sonnets will be announced and read.
