Remains found in Mississippi in Wabasha

Human remains were found on the Mississippi River south of Wabasha on Saturday.

According to the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, the office received a call at around 4:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, reporting that human remains had been found along the Mississippi River in West Newton, Minn. The deputy was informed that a local resident found a human leg with a shoe attached while cleaning out a debris pile 20 feet from the shore. No other remains were located.

The area was searched again on Sunday, but no other remains were found.
According to Chief Deputy James Warren, there was nothing to indicate whether the leg was from a male or female. He also said there was still flesh attached, which indicates that the remains are fairly recent.

Warren said they are looking to see if it is related to the disappearance of boater David John Sheridan, 61, who went missing in late April on Lake Pepin. According to Warren, officials are comparing the remains to an existing DNA source to see if it is a match, but nothing else could be reported oat this time.

This in an ongoing investigation, and more information will follow after the sheriff receives a report from the Medical Examiner’s office.
