Cuba explored at Learning Club

On June 28, 2018, Debi Niebuhr and Eric Nelson spoke to the Learning Club about their 10-day trip to Cuba in February of this year. They, along with 13 other delegates from the Winona area, were part of a 21-person delegation sponsored by Witness for Peace, a non-religious organization dedicated to examining the impacts of U.S. policy on life in Latin America and the Caribbean. Their visit involved discussions and excursions focused on public health, education, agriculture and ecological concerns. The trip taught them 55 years of the U.S. embargo (blockade) has isolated the country and caused economic stagnation without achieving regime change as hoped for by Congress and presidents since 1961. In spite of this adversity, the people are creative, welcoming, friendly and resilient. Niebuhr and Nelson showed photos about Cuban art, medicine, literacy campaigns, education, organic farming and more.
