The Winona Senior High School wrestling squad started the season with a trip to Owatonna, Minn., to face the perennial power Huskies in a dual meet. Owatonna looks to be very solid again this season with the only Winhawk wins coming from Ryan Henningson, Trevor Pomeroy, and Tyler Nachtigal.
On Saturday, the Winhawk grapplers traveled to La Crosse, Wis., for the Logan Tournament and came away with a fourth-place team finish. Winona crowned three champions with Logan Henningson (113), Ryan Henningson (120), and Evann Fabian (132) all taking first-place honors, while Evan Maurude (106), Lance Thorn (220), and Zander Rusert (285) all came through with third-place finishes. Winona wrestlers went 8-0 in the final round of the tournament. First-year head coach Joe Hoialmen was pleased with the results of the tournament and sends a big “thank you” out to his coaching staff, a group of enthusiastic young mentors who have been working hard to get the team ready for competition.
The next action for the wrestlers will be on Thursday, December 13, when they host a triangular with Caledonia, Minn., and Austin, Minn. The first round will begin at 5 p.m. at the high school.
