Matter of Faith: The next Advent

From: Philip Sorensen

We have just celebrated the first advent of Christ, an event that occurred some 4,000 years after God first promised it. Over the years, God kept the promise alive through the prophets and, at just the right time, sent forth His son to redeem us from sin. His very name, Jesus, means “Jehovah saves.”

After his death and resurrection, as he ascended into Heaven, angels reminded the disciples of his promise to return with the words, “This same Jesus will return in the same way he went into Heaven.” While 2,000 years have passed, over the last 100 years, we are seeing more and more of yesterday’s prophecies becoming today’s headlines. Perhaps the most significant events have been the rebirth of the nation of Israel and the recognition of Jerusalem its capitol (Isaiah 66:8-9; Luke 21:24, 28). I don’t believe it won’t be long until Christ returns to take believers home to be with him. He loves us and is not willing that any should perish, but that all should repent (II Peter 3:9). He waits with open arms for us to reach out to him (Romans 10:13). Don’t wait!
