Fifth-grade music concert set for January 31 at WMS

(1/28/2019)

The walls of Winona Middle School’s (WMS) music room are not only filled with music, but also rich life lessons. Song names like “Best Self Best Work Best World,” “Bein’ Me,” “We Are A Family,” “Friends Forever” and “Reach for the Rainbow” are among the songs that show students how to become their best selves.

With big smiles on the students’ faces, they practice their songs for the upcoming fifth-grade general music concert. Music classes at WMS are more than just filling the room with beautiful music. Jaime Hanratty’s music class listens and performs songs that are helping students set high goals in life. The song lyrics are about giving their best, improving the world and being a good friend.

One song that is being performed even includes a short rap section. This exposes the students to a diverse range of music. Hanratty said, “I believe that a concert can be much more than kids singing well-known songs for an audience. We can use this opportunity to learn about music as well as life lessons, and help our audience think about some important topics.” In between each song the students also read introductions that relate and lead into the next song. It provides students the chance to collaborate in groups and establish stronger relationships with their peers.

The fifth-grade general music concert is on January 31 at 6:30 p.m. at WMS Auditorium. Hanratty and Courtney Zupancich are directing the performance.
