An apartment building on Winona’s west side was engulfed in flames on Tuesday night, resulting in a full evacuation and one hospitalization, according to the Winona Police Department.
At 11:29 p.m., dispatch received a call about a fire at the apartment complex on the 1200 block Gilmore Avenue with six people inside. According to police, four apartments were engulfed in flames. Two residents had reportedly made it outside when help arrived, while two more climbed out through the balcony. Firefighters reportedly observed two people stuck inside pounding on a window, which they subsequently broke to help the residents get out of the building.
One occupant was taken to the hospital for the treatment of non-life threatening injuries, and police say there were no serious injuries.
The cause of the fire is unknown, and damage estimates are still pending.
