Pictured are two of the truckloads of playground equipment that has arrived in Winona. Fastenal Corporation brought the shipment to our city where it will be stored until the site is fully prepared and ready for installation.
If you drive by the playground area by the bandshell, you will see that the pieces of equipment that did not meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards have been removed. Next the site will be prepared for installation. This will require quite a bit of excavation so that we don’t have warping of the matting surface.
What seemed like merely a “dream” four years ago will soon be a reality. The three Winona Lions clubs wish to thank all those people that contributed to the success of this project. I would like to thank the Lions and especially my committee. It took hundreds of hours of work, hundreds of letters to be mailed, lots of calls to be made, numerous fundraisers to be held, lots of articles and news releases to be written and aired and lots of grants to be written. Once we all see the finished product, we will all see that it was well worth the time effort and money.
It will be heartwarming to hear the laughter and see the smiles of the children with special needs as they finally can play along side their peers. It will also be great to see senior citizens and other adults who experience difficulty walking as they will be able to push their grandchildren on the swings without worry of falling. The “Pour ‘n Play” matting will make it much easier for everyone to access the slides and swings.
We are not done yet, however. We still need park benches and picnic tables to be placed around the play area. We would also like to have a walkway connecting the Rose Garden with the playground. So, what I am saying is that if you have not had the opportunity to donate, you still can. A bench costs between $1,100 and $1,200 and picnic tables cost between $1,600 and $1,700. Please send you donations to: Every Child’s Dream, Winona, 104 East Fourth Street, Winona, Minn., 55987.

Thanks in advance.
