2018 Surprise Sculpture participating students installing one of the sculptures in the community.
This year marks the seventh summer that Lanesboro Arts will offer summer arts education programs for area youth. Led by Lanesboro Arts staff and area artists, Surprise Sculpture has become a community staple that encourages participants to construct large-scale, site-specific sculptures for public spaces. Each sculpture is created from a mixture of upcycled/recycled materials and fine arts materials. Surprise Sculpture serves youth ages nine and under. Sculptures are constructed in Lanesboro Arts’ St. Mane Theatre, which includes classroom/studio space for education programs. Participants learn various principles of art-making, but the program also focuses on intergenerational collaboration, group decision-making and community pride.
For youth ages 10-18, Lanesboro Arts will offer Open Studio, a program in its second year at Lanesboro Arts. Participants are invited to use the St. Mane Theatre studio space and materials to create their own works of art. Participants are also welcome to bring their own supplies. “Open Studio allows the freedom for participating artists to explore new artistic mediums,” said Kara Maloney, Lanesboro Arts’ education lead. “Our goal is to support and nurture young artists. We also find that participants learn from and inspire each other throughout the process.”
Surprise Sculpture runs from noon to 2 p.m. on each Tuesday from June 11 to July 16, while Open Studio runs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the same days. While registration is recommended, it is not required. Participants can drop in and attend one or more sessions whenever their schedule permits. Summer arts programming through Lanesboro Arts is free and open to the public. The programs directly serve rural youth from Lanesboro, Harmony, Preston, Rushford, and beyond; in addition, the projects are then enjoyed by the general public, including residents, business owners, and visitors to the area.
Lanesboro Arts’ mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages. The St. Mane Theatre is located at 206 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro. For more information about Surprise Sculpture and Open Studio, contact Kara at 507-467-2446 or visit www.lanesboroarts.org
