A semi-truck carrying hazardous material crashed on I-90 and Highway 61, resulting in the closure of both roads Friday morning, according to the Winona County Sheriff’s Office

At 5:05 a.m. on Friday, June 14, deputies responded to a report of a crash involved a double-trailer on I-90 and Highway 61 near Dresbach. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Freightliner semi truck with double trailers was traveling westbound on I-90 near mile marker 271 when it ran off the roadway into the right shoulder. The truck then reportedly struck a guard rail and then the concrete bridge railing, causing the two trailers to separate.

The truck and connected trailer overturned and came to a rest on I-90, blocking both westbound lanes, while the second trailer reportedly went over the bridge railing and came to a rest on the right shoulder of Highway 61.

The second trailer was reportedly transporting several barrels of acetone and isopropyl alcohol –– both hazardous and highly flammable materials. According to Winona County Emergency Management Ben Klinger, none of the hazardous materials had leaked as a result of the crash, despite significant damage to the trailer containing the 55-gallon drums.

Winona County Emergency Management was called at 5:45 a.m., and both I-90 and Highway 61 were closed down due to the crash. I-90 was reopened at 8:50 a.m.; Highway 61 was reopened later that afternoon after a crew arrived to pick up and transport the remaining barrels of acetone left at the scene.

The driver, Phong Yang, 27, of White Bear Lake, Minn., reportedly sustained minor cuts and scrapes but was not transported to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Nodine First Responders, Dakota First Responders and Tri-State Ambulance assisted with the crash. All three groups cleared the scene by 8:03 a.m.

The crash is under investigation.
