Lewiston- Altura creates backpack program for students

(7/8/2019)

Over the past several years, the Lewiston-Altura community has experienced an increase in the number of students utilizing the free or reduced lunch program. Projected numbers for the program during the 2019-2020 school year, among the public and private schools in the Lewiston-Altura community, will surpass 300. To help fight hunger in the homes of students a group of community members are starting a backpack program.

The backpack program will discreetly provide nutritious, child-friendly, and easy-to-prepare food to children enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program at the Lewiston-Altura Elementary School, Lewiston-Altura Middle School, St. John’s Lutheran School and Immanuel Lutheran-Silo School. The food will be distributed in non-descript backpacks students take home over the weekends during the school year. Families can opt out of the program if desired.

Channel One Regional Food Bank is committed to providing food in partnership with the St. Charles Resource Center. The Lewiston-Altura Community Backpack Program will start in fall 2019.

In order to make the backpack program sustainable, community support is needed. Monetary donations can be made to LAHS, 100 County Road 25, Lewiston, Minn., 55952. Please indicate “Backpack Program” in the line item. For additional information, please contact Stacy Shones, program volunteer, at 507-421-4873.
