Exhibition of quilts to open at MMAM

(9/5/2019)

Opening on Friday, September 5, at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) in Winona, an exhibition of quilts called H2Oh! Art Quilts will premier. H2Oh! features unique quilts by artists from around the world, all created around the central theme, water. The exhibition runs through January 19, 2020.

Organized by the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), and juried by California-based artist and activist Linda Glass, H2Oh! Art Quilts highlights the impact of water on humans and the earth. SAQA received 521 artist entries for this exhibition, from which 34 were ultimately selected. This exhibition encouraged artists to interpret one of the most vital, desired, powerful, sacred, and enjoyed resources on Earth in their own unique, individual style, whether abstract, graphic, or representational. SAQA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications.

Running alongside H2Oh! is a special community exhibition in the museum’s Oberton Education Room featuring quilts made by members of the Winona Area Quilt Guild. Their works, also inspired by water, highlight the talents of Winona area quilters.

There will be an opening, sneak-peak reception celebrating the exhibition on the evening of Thursday, September 4, from 5-6 p.m. This event is free for members and students — $10 for all others — and includes passed hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
