Carter Briggs is Big 9 Section champion
Three Winona Senior High School cross country runners were sent off to the MSHSL State meet in style on Friday morning.
Carter Briggs, Cody Peterson and Anni Skillicorn all qualified as individuals for the State meet, which will be held Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. Briggs, the Big 9 and Section 1AA champion, is heading back for the fourth consecutive year. Peterson is returning for the second time, but the first as an individual qualifier. They will compete in the boys race, which begins at 11 a.m. Skillicorn qualified as an individual for the second time, a remarkable feat considering she is in just her third year of cross country. She will compete in the girls race, which begins at 10 a.m.
Winona has a proud tradition of excellence in cross country, with four team state championships (1982 boys, 1986 girls, 1987 boys, 1989 girls) and four individual state champions (Scott Morken 1987, Garrett Heath 2002-2003, Elliott Heath 2005). Counting the three appearances this weekend, a total of 136 runners have made 239 appearances at the state meet. Fifteen former runners are in the WSHS Hall of Fame and 11 have gone on to run on a Division I team in college.
