John Paulson Big Band at the Winona Art Center January 2012.

The John Paulson Big Band performs Dec. 1

John Paulson’s big band returns to Winona Saturday, December 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for an evening of exciting and original contemporary jazz at Wellington’s Pub and Grill. They will perform two sets of music by tenor saxophonist, composer and musical director Dr. John Paulson. The group includes some of the best jazz players and teachers in the region and this is a rare opportunity to hear them perform together. This performance will include several new compositions by Dr. Paulson as well as hits from the group’s two previous CDs. Segments of the performance will be recorded for broadcast on KSMQ Public Television’s “Off 90” to be aired at a later date. Paulson taught jazz and woodwinds at Saint Mary’s University for over 30 years and taught jazz studies at Winona State for the past six years.

The 18 piece John Paulson Big Band began in November 2012 with their premiere concert performing to a capacity crowd at the Winona Art Center. Portions of this performance were included on their first CD “The John Paulson Big Band Project” and released the following year. Their newest CD “Five Years On” was recognized by KBEM FM jazz radio as one of the top-10 new big band CDs of last year. The group has done grant supported concerts and clinics at the Rushford High School Red Wing High School, Century High and Mayo High Schools in Rochester as well as performing at the Winona County History Center. They have also performed at Winona State University and at JEN (The Jazz Educators Network) national conference in St. Louis, Mo., in addition to backing up the famous Hornheads group at Saint Mary’s University. The JP Big Band is unique in that they perform all original jazz compositions and arrangements by Paulson. The members of the group are from all over the Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin regions. Wellington’s Pub and Grill in Winona has become their unofficial home base for regular fall concerts and there is no cover charge for the concert, but contributions will be welcome to offset expenses. Arrive early for this special event because seating will be limited.
