Winona wrestlers head to Sections match with wins on their heels


Section meet Thursday in Farmington

The Winona Wrestlers traveled to Rochester last Thursday for a triangular with Rochester Century and Lewiston Altura – Rushford Peterson. The Ramhawks fell to LARP by a 51-27 score before rebounding with a 42-36 victory over Century. Ryan Henningson, Drew Meyer, Lance Thorn, and Zander Rusert each recorded a pair of wins on the night.

Winona entered two wrestlers in the JV Big Nine Wrestling Tournament held at Winona Senior High School on Saturday with both wrestlers coming through with hard-fought third-place finishes. Isaac Allred went 4-1 on the day and scored a takedown in overtime for sudden victory in his third-place match at 145 pounds. There were 17 wrestlers in his weight class. Brennin Spelts lost in overtime in his semifinal match, but came back strong with pin to claim third place at 126 pounds.

The next action for the Winona mattmen will be on Thursday when the travel to Farmington for the first round of the Section Team Tournament. The Hawk grapplers will wrestle Rochester Century in the first round with the winner taking on Farmington in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal winners advance to the Final Four which will be held in Rochester on Saturday.
