Hadyn Brown advances in spelling bee

Hadyn Brown, a sixth-grade student at Winona Middle School, finished second in the Southeast Minnesota Regional Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 11, in Rochester, Minn. The second-place finish means Brown will advance to the Southeast Minnesota Final Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 25.

The champion of the Southeast Minnesota Final Spelling Bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Brown was one of three WAPS students competing in the bee. The others were seventh-grader Brooke Cherny, the WAPS District Spelling Bee winner in October, and sixth-grader Jamya Harvey, the district’s second-place finisher. All represented their school well.

Brown survived tense final rounds that included words like jurisdiction, tardigrade, bizarro, and beatific, but was foiled by subcutaneous. The first-place winner’s final word was cataclysmic.

The regional spelling bees are sponsored by Southeast Service Cooperative.
