2nd Saturdays: Home Edition

(8/5/2020)

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) in Winona, MN, is excited to launch it’s second virtual arts access program — Second Saturdays: Home Edition.

On Saturday, August 8, the Winona community is invited to take part in Second Saturdays: Home Edition. Inspired by the museum’s collections, exhibitions, local artists, talented staff and volunteers, virtual Second Saturdays will offer some of the museum’s favorite components of the on-site program that you can do at home, plus some interactive elements that can only be offered online.

The theme for August is “Shaping Waters: The Mighty Mississippi.” People in Winona live on one of the most powerful and celebrated rivers in the world. The Mighty Mississippi has flowed for at least 5.6-million years, and this sacred river has inspired and influenced artists in a variety of ways.

Visit mmam.org/SecondSaturdays anytime on Saturday, August 8, and find videos, games, and activities for all ages to enjoy. They will remain active on the website after August 8 as well, so come back as often as you would like.

Some of the features of this month’s virtual program include a look at Mississippi River inspired art with Curator Dave Casey, Mississippi River “Jeopardy” style quiz, music by the Mississippi River from Seamus St. Clair, Bingo Overboard: Nature Edition, and more.

In addition, art kits will be available for pick up beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, outside the entrance to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (800 Riverview Drive). There will be 100 art kits, and they are available on a first-come, first-served basis — MMAM is not taking reservations.

There are two different kits — one designed for ages seven and younger, and one designed for ages eight and older. Please take one kit per child. The Minnesota Marine Art Museum will be distributing an additional 1,100 of these art kits through the WAPS’ summer lunch program and Project FINE.

There is no cost to attend the virtual event, although the museum would appreciate it if you would fill out a survey which helps it plan future virtual and in-person events.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
