First Annual WINONArts events to kick off with Bud King Roller Disco Ball

(1/24/2018)

The city will be presenting a series of 25 free creative events, WINONArts, held throughout the year in various municipal parks and venues throughout Winona. WINONArts is possible thanks to founding sponsorships from Winona National Bank and Merchants Bank and a startup program grant awarded in partnership with Visit Winona.

The series begins with thefirst annual Winter Bud King Ice Disco Ball on Saturday, January 27, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Bud King Ice Arena, 670 East Front Street. People of all ages are welcome to skate to the beat! Admission will be free; bring your own skates or rentals will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis. Prizes will be awarded for best disco costumes, and some fun games will be held. Concessions will be available at nominal costs. Donations for future WINONArts programs will gratefully be accepted at the door.

WINONArts’ mission is to solidify the city of Winona’s creative identity by active participation, partnering, and production of a wide range of arts and cultural events in city-owned spaces often working with existing creative programs and organizations and regional artists.

WINONArts programs will include:

Floating concerts

Each season (including on the ice in winter) musicians will perform on a stage on Lake Winona. The concerts will allow audience members to paddle out and float along with the performers, or to sit along the water’s edge onshore. Family games and special events will accompany each event. Fire pits will be available in the winter.

Live @ the Levee

At least four times per year, the city will roll out a mobile stage on the edge of the Mississippi and hold a daylong festival featuring family-friendly food, markets, and music. Live @ the Levee was hugely successful when it began a few years ago, and the city is thrilled to be partnering to host the return of live music to its newly renovated Levee Park thanks to a partnership with Visit Winona and a grant to launch the levee concerts.

Movies in the Park

In outdoor spaces all over the city, fun films for people of all ages will be shown, including double features that begin with features for families and end with late-night cult favorites for adults. It’s the return of the drive-in movies — this time without the need for automobiles, only the stars.

Dance Plein Air

In select public locations around the city, everyone in the community is invited to take place in outdoor dances, with some featuring professional instruction, all featuring open dance periods. With dancing in the park, in the streets, atop the bluffs, alongside the Mississippi, Dance Plein Air brings the art of movement to all areas of Winona including the kickoff at the Bud King Ice Arena (indoors and outdoors) for the first disco ball.

Arts in the Hall

Arts in the Hall is a series of special event programs utilizing spaces that aren’t always thought of for cultural programming, such as a future art gallery and plays performed in city hall, a pop-up traveling Winona art museum, “Bridge Building” — public speaking events at the base of the bridge on the banks of the Mississippi, and musicians and dance programs at the overlook of Garvin Heights.
