Author Andrea Swensson to speak about her new book ‘Got To Be Something Here: The Rise of the Minneapolis Sound’


Following the release of her book “Got To Be Something Here: The Rise of the Minneapolis Sound” Andrea Swensson is headed to Mid West Music Store, 168 East Third Street, Winona, to talk and take questions about her new book on the Minneapolis sound. She will be there on Friday, November 3, at 7 p.m. Swensson will also be signing copies of her book which will be available for purchase courtesy of her publisher, University of Minnesota Press, and Winona’s Paperbacks and Pieces. Following the event at Mid West Music Store, Ed’s No Name Bar, 252 East Third Street, will host an after-party at 9:30 p.m. where Swensson will sit in with DJ Rhumpshaker and DJ Eddy Baby to highlight tracks from the Minneapolis sound and other Minnesota and Midwest musicians.

About the book

It’s the story, from start to superstardom, of the musicians who shaped the Minneapolis sound.

Beginning in the year of Prince’s birth, 1958, with the recording of Minnesota’s first R&B record by a North Minneapolis band called the Big Ms, “Got to Be Something Here” traces the rise of that distinctive sound through two generations of political upheaval, rebellion, and artistic passion.

“‘Got to Be Something Here’ nails the atmosphere that I grew up in. Clubs, policies, and things that didn’t make sense back then, after reading this book make all the sense in the world. I think anyone who wants to understand musicians who hailed from North Minneapolis needs to read it. There are answers in these pages,” said André Cymone.
