The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts will conduct auditions for its 16th annual Summer Dance Intensive boarding summer camp at various times and locations in the region. This year’s Summer Dance Intensive will be held from July 8-28 in Winona.
Intermediate and advanced dancers between ages 11 and 22 who are ready to enhance their dance technique are invited to audition any of the following dates:
• Saturday, January. 27, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at La Crosse Dance Centre, 2716 Commerce St. in La Crosse, Wis.
• Saturday, February 10, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Green Bay School of Dance, 129 South Washington St. in Green Bay, Wis.
• Saturday, March 10, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Cowels Center/James Sewell Ballet, 528 Hennepin Ave. Suite 218 in Minneapolis, Minn.
• Saturday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Valéncia Arts Center, 1164 W. 10th St. in Winona.
In the Summer Dance Intensive, participants will spend seven to nine hours each day studying dance in technique classes and rehearsals under the direction of seasoned, professional instructors.
There is no pre-registration or fee to audition. Dancers should plan to arrive 30 minutes early to get signed in and ready to audition. MCA Director of Dance Tammy Schmidt will lead the auditions, which will be formatted like a full ballet class. Students with pointe experience should bring pointe shoes to the audition class. After the class, students will have the option to showcase a prepared jazz, tap, modern, or musical theatre dance center combination of at least 64 counts or 16 bars.
Students who will be entering Saint Mary’s University in fall 2018 can simultaneously or solely audition for the Summer Dance Intensive and the Saint Mary’s Theatre and Dance Department Dance Scholarship. Dance scholarships are renewable and range from $1,000-$2,000 a year. There is no fee to apply, but dancers will need to provide a dance résumé with their application.
Those who previously participated in the Summer Dance Intensive will receive a 25 percent discounted rate and aren’t required to audition unless they’d like to be considered for a scholarship. Video auditions are also accepted.
