Another successful Great River Shakespeare Festival/Maria W. Faust Sonnets Contest ended on August 4 with a public reading of 24 winning sonnets, from among 424 total sonnets submitted. Three dozen states and seven foreign countries were represented in the competition. This year’s annual contest was the seventh since having been renamed to include a memorial to Winona State University graduate Maria Faust, while the original contest began in 2008 as an idea spawned by then Winona Poet Laureate Jim Armstrong in collaboration with the Great River Shakespeare Festival (GRSF) staff. Growth of interest and participation shows no sign of diminishing.
