Accessible playground breaks ground

On November 28 at the Lake Park band shell, Winona Lions Clubs leaders, Winona city officials, and donors to the Every Child’s Dream project broke ground on a new, accessible playground for all children to enjoy, regardless of abilities. Lions Club member and project chairman Jack Krage reported that there are 244 special needs students in the Winona Area Public School District alone, but that, currently, Winona does not have a playground that is accessible to physically or developmentally handicapped children. “There shouldn’t be any child that isn’t able to play in a playground,” Winona Mayor Mark Peterson said. “That won’t happen anymore in Winona thanks to you and the Lions Club.” Local businesses, the city, and individual donors contributed nearly $700,000 to fund a new playground with equipment specially designed for children in wheelchairs, children with sensory handicaps, and children with developmental disabilities. “Dreams do come true,” Krage said.
