The fundraising is nearly complete. Every Child’s Dream is soon to become a reality. However, a few amenities still are needed to make this a fantastic family area. The Lions of Winona are calling on the Winona community to help put the finishing touches on this over-$750,000 project.
If you have driven or walked by the play area near the band shell, you will notice that most of the old equipment is gone and fencing surrounds the site. The large tower with slides remains, as do a few swings and the climbing wall. What is left is a huge construction zone. Those remaining pieces will be incorporated into the new scheme of play equipment.
The following steps remain before children can again be heard laughing and seen playing at the park: the soil will be tested for its composition and specific steps need to be taken to insure the matting around the equipment remains flat. Then, rock and fill will be hauled in, which will provide an underlayment for the matting. The surface needs to have a slight slope so that the runoff from rain and melting snow flows north toward the storm drain and away from the base of the band shell. Then the equipment will be installed. The actual time frame is dependent on the weather. The final stages are to install signage and finalize landscaping.
There is a wish list of items that would make this an even better family area. The Lions would like to add benches and a few tables around the play area so families can sit while the kids are enjoying themselves. Another additional enhancement would be to connect the Rose Garden with the play area by installing a walkway. While Lions members do not have a cost for adding the walkway, they do have approximate costs for the benches and tables. The benches will cost around $1,100-$1,200 and the tables would cost about $1,600-1,700 apiece.

The Lions wish to thank each and every person/organization that donated to this fundraising effort. Every single donation was important. As the saying goes, “it takes a community.” It certainly did take the entire Winona area to bring Every Child’s Dream to fruition.
