Upcoming free programs at MMAM

On top of one of the finest collections of art in the region, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) regularly offers unique programs for art-lovers and art-newbies of all ages. Designed to engage, educate and entertain, there is always something new to do at your art museum.

Have you ever wondered how ships were able to navigate the world’s oceans in the days before GPS? On June 20, from 6-7 p.m., Winona State University professor and MMAM Board member Greg Neidhart will lead a free discussion titled “The Perfect Silence of the Stars: Marine Navigation in the Early American Navy.” Neidhart will take a look at the tools and techniques used to navigate the seas during the early days of the United States Navy. Included in the presentation will be historic examples of these tools, rarely on display, from MMAM’s collection. This talk is given in conjunction with the exhibition “Maarten Platje: The Early History of the U.S. Navy,” on display through August 18, 2019.

On June 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. is the always popular “The Art of Living/Riding the Wave,” with artist and therapist Sarah Johnson. During this interactive program, participants observe and create art while exploring the connections between creativity and health. The thought-provoking activities are designed to encourage connections with attendees. Each workshop is unique; past themes have focused on acceptance, self-compassion and willingness, among others. Space is limited. Please call 507-474-6626, email, or visit to register.

Both “The Perfect Silence of the Stars” and “The Art of Living” are free thanks to the generous support of Ernest and Sally Micek in memory of W.B. “Bill” Gautch.

Summer is here, which means MMAM’s annual Family Fest is back! This free event includes art-making projects indoors and out, fishing off the shore of the Mississippi River with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, gallery tours, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, face painting, and more. A hot dog, brat or veggie dog lunch is available for purchase. Family Fest is on Saturday, June 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and occurs rain or shine.

MMAM is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization owned by its members. Its mission is to engage visitors in meaningful visual arts experiences through education and exhibitions that explore the ongoing and historic human relationship with water.
