Sequoia Society’s Bridge Marathon awards

In celebrating 60 years of bridge, the Sequoia Society recently held the Bridge Marathon awards night at the First Congregational Church in Winona. The evening started with dessert provided by the Sequoia Society followed by the presentation of the year’s awards for the partners with the highest scores on each of six teams.

Award winners

Team 1: Sue Kowalski and Nancy Bachler with 22,970 points. Second place: Charlotte Clark and Debbie Sheets with 21,920 points.

Team 2: Sandy Brooks and Sue Hauser with 26,740 points. Second place: Anne Rompa and Sue Steiner with 25,600 points.

Couples team 4: Chuck and Barb Bentley with 26,750 points. Second place: Jim and Gretchen Erwin with 26,100 points.

Men’s team 5: Chuck Bentley and Chris Carroll with 29,140 points. Second place: John Rethlefsen and Jerry Rusert with 25,850 points.

Team 6: Mary Kosek and Judy Richter with 28,840 points. Second place: Terry Bauer and Jane Brinkman with 21,730 points.

Team 7: Judy Richter and Joyce Woodworth with 27,170 points. Second place: Sue Hauser and Laurie Watson with 23,110 points.

Out of 51 pairs, the overall winner of the 2018-2019 marathon was Chuck Bentley and Chris Carroll with 29,140 points, closely followed by Judy Richter and Mary Kosek with 28,840 points.

The first marathon dates back to 1958 and was started by the Portia Club. In 2000-2001, the marathon transitioned into the Sequoia Society. This year’s Sequoia Club and marathon funds benefitted the following groups: Winona Public Children’s Books, Hope Harbor, Knitted Knockers, Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, Winona Volunteer Services, Habitat for Humanity, Family and Children’s Center, Friendship Center, YMCA Youth Scholarship and WAPS Feed the Kids.
