Picture this: Summer grazing scenes wanted

(7/29/2020)

Get your cameras clicking and spread the word! The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) is encouraging livestock producers to celebrate the environmental stewardship of managed rotational grazing by entering their best snapshots of summer grazing scenes: livestock on pasture, multi-species grazing, grazing cover crops, plant and animal diversity, ecosystem function, rotational grazing techniques, and beyond.

How does the contest work? Entrants submitting photos for the contest must be a member of LSP’s free Soil Builders Network. To sign up, visit landstewardshipproject.org/lspsoilbuilders. If you are not sure whether you are already a member of the Network, feel free to sign up again. Photos must be taken by the entrant themselves. Entries should follow the contest theme of “Summer Grazing.” Categories of entry include 1) General and 2) Youth (ages 13-18). Only one photo entry per person is allowed.

Entries must be submitted by e-mail to LSP’s Alex Romano at aromano@landstewardshipproject.org by Friday, August 14, at 5 p.m. Please include in your e-mail submission the following information: a) title of photograph, b) first and last name of photographer, c) date and location of photograph, d) photo contest category (General or Youth), and e) a short (one to three sentences) description of the photograph.

Entries for each category will be reviewed by designated farmer-judges selected from LSP’s Soil Health Steering Committee. All photos will be scored by judges on the contest theme and criteria. Criteria for scoring include relevancy, originality, emotional impact, and photo quality. The photos receiving the highest scores win. The contest organizers reserve the right to disqualify entries which do not conform to the stated contest rules and criteria or contain any of the following: alcohol, drugs, or illegal and inappropriate material.

One grand prize winner, second place, and third place will be selected from each category within a week of the Aug. 14 deadline. Contest winners and runners-up will be notified by e-mail and prizes will be delivered. For the General category, the grand prize is a Brix refractometer, second place is a soil health package (shovel, water infiltration ring, and heavy-duty rain gauge), and third place is a digital voltmeter. For the Youth category, grand prize is $75, second place is $50, and third place is $25. Furthermore, photos by winners and runners-up will be printed and mounted in LSP’s Lewiston office for a designated length of time, then delivered to the winners. Winning photos will also be displayed on the LSP website and Facebook page.
