Willard E. Sherwood, 86, of Winona, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona. Bill, as he was known, was born in Elba, MN. on April 16, 1922, the son of Leon E. and Josephine (Bruske) Sherwood.
He is a 1940 graduate of St. Charles, MN, High School. Bill never married.
Most of his life he was a self- employed barber. He first barbered in Minneapolis, later Kellogg, MN, and then came to Goodview where he operated the Goodview Barber Shop. Bill also worked as an elevator operator at Fiberite for a period of time.
He is a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. army attaining the rank of Tech 5. He saw action in the Philippines and was a part of the Army of Occupation in Japan.
Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting in his earlier days. He often adopted stray cats and cared for them. Bill enjoyed riding his bicycle around Winona and could frequently be seen enjoying his rides.
Bill is survived by three nephews, Steve (Toni) Sherwood of Goodview, MN, and their family: Lyle (Shirley) Bartsh, Elba, MN, and their family, and Stan Bartsh of St. Charles, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Milton, and sister, Avis Bartsh.
Graveside services for Bill will be on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, followed by military burial rites.
