Gerald A. “Jerry” Hermann, 80, of Winona, died Saturday, Jan. 3, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI.
Jerry was born July 17, 1928, in La Crosse to Joseph and Elizabeth (Hegenbart) Hermann. He married Irene Moga in Pine Creek, WI, on May 19, 1953.
Jerry was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Winona, IBEW #343, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus. He honorably served in the Korean War.
He began his career as an electrician for Payton Electric in Austin, MN. In 1962 he and Irene relocated to Winona where he was employed as an electrician at Bay State Milling Co. and Polachek Electric until his retirement in 1988.
Jerry spent retirement years traveling with family and friends. He was a loving husband, dad and grandpa and a true jack-of-all-trades, lending a hand to many. His woodworking projects will be treasured by many. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing, walking in the woods, playing with his dog, Bailey, working out with the therapists at WSU Cardiac Rehab and his weekly Tuesday night visits with Harley.
Jerry will be greatly missed by his family: Wife, Irene; daughter, Ann Hermann and son-in-law Randy Sass of Winona, daughter, Mary Fleming of St. Paul, MN, son, John Hermann of Fairport Harbor, OH; grandchildren, Andrew, Rebecca and Sarah Fleming and Kristen and Mark Hermann; sisters, Isabel Buege, Rita Wicka; brothers, Donald (Lucille), Lloyd (Ellie) Hermann.
He is preceded in death by his parents; infant son, James; sisters, Eleanor Kulas Galewski and Dorothy Colclasure; brothers Eldon and Joseph Hermann.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 noon on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Winona. Monsignor Roy E. Literski will officiate. The American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 will provide full military honors outside of the church following the Mass.
Private family burial will be held in the spring at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Pine Creek, WI.
Visitation will be held in the Commons of St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, from 11 AM until the time of the Mass.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Fleming, Harley Antoff, Patrick Kramer, Al Kruger, Ed Steele and Fred Olson.
Memorials may be directed to WSU Cardiac Rehab Program or Gundersen Heart Institute.
