James E. Skeels, 79, of Winona, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Jim was born in Winona to George and Adeline (Teske) Skeels on December 28, 1929. He married Barbara Cysewski on January 7, 1956, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Winona.
Jim honorably served in the Korean War. He was a member of the St. Casimir’s Catholic Church, American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.
He worked at the Winona Post office for over 30 years until his retirement in 1992.
Jim and Barb would have been married 53 years on January 7th. He enjoyed fishing, puzzles, watching the Vikings, spending time with his grandchildren and woodworking.
Jim will be greatly missed by his family: wife, Barb, children: LuAnn Powers, Grand Marsh WI, Paul (Sheila), Winona, Mary Kay (Greg) Martin, La Crosse, WI, Edward and special friend Becki and girls, Anna and Angie, Fond du Lac, WI, grandchildren: Ben, Bernadette, and Daniel Powers, Crystal Solomon Andrew, David and Emily Skeels, Marissa and Nicole Martin and Addison Skeels, brother: William (Philly) Skeels, sister, Margaret (Gene) Wamhoff, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial was January 9, 2009, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona. Monsignor Roy E. Literski officiated.
Burial was in the family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery, where the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 provided full military honors.
Pallbearers were Greg Martin, Ben, Bernadette and Daniel Powers, and Andrew and David Skeels.
Memorials should be directed to Saint Anne Extended Healthcare in Winona where Jim was lovingly and wonderfully cared for the last nearly three years, or to Alzheimer’s research.
