Oletha H. Scanlan, 97, of Winona, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona. Oletha died on her birthday, January 7, 1912. She was born at Oak Ridge in Mount Vernon Township of Winona to daughter of Edwin and Catherine (Walch) Schell.
She attended Holy Trinity High School in Rollingstone, then the College of St. Teresa in Winona and earned her education degree from Winona State Teachers College in 1939. She then taught from 1932-1936 in Winona County District #105; 1936-1938 in a two-room school, grades 1-4 at Minneiska, MN, from 1939-1940 at Mazeppa; 1940-1943 at Morton, MN, and finally from 1943-1948 in Winona.
Oletha married Donald J. Scanlan on June 7, 1948, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Minneiska, MN. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1992. They resided in Preston, MN, until moving to Winona in 1973.
She is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Winona, its Rosary Society and Quilters Group.
Oletha is survived by her daughter, Patricia Scanlan and husband, Michael Ford of Oshkosh, WI, and their sons, Vladimer Scanlan Ford and Pavel Scanlan Ford. A sister-in-law, Mary (Charles) Doffing, Winona, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and her gentle hand of kindness included her extended family as well. Oletha had a great appreciation for the staffs at Callista Court and Saint Anne Extended Healthcare. She will be remembered for her genuine kindness, measured praise, strong faith and as a good friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, John Schell, two sisters, Margaret Peshon and Florence Kranz and a sister-in-law, Vivian Kramer.
A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Oletha’s life will be Sunday, January 11, 2009, at 1:00PM in the Chapel of Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Rev. Robert Stamschror officiating. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lanesboro, MN. Friends may call on Sunday from noon to time of services at Saint Anne. Memorial gifts may be directed to Saint Anne Extended Healthcare or the Donor’s Choice.
