Ever since a fire destroyed its worship space in 2013, the Winona Islamic Center has been searching for a new, permanent home. Two years later, the congregation may have finally found one not far from the site of its former storefront.
The Winona Islamic Center bought the former site of Boardwalk Fitness, 71 West Third Street, late last week. Boardwalk Fitness owner James Hearon auctioned off exercise equipment from the private gym this month, and sold the downtown storefront to the Islamic Center for $180,000.
“It feels great,” Islamic Center Board member Mohamed Elhindi said when asked about the organization’s long search coming to an end. However, Elhindi continued, “The details — it’s almost not real yet.”
Plans for the building are still being formed, and Islamic Center leaders expect to make a formal announcement sometime in the near future.
